This design by Klassen Remodeling & Design features a closet-turned-office that incorporates a built-in desk and shelving, as well as a cozy seating area for relaxing. Well-organized desk, once behind closed doors, nobody would know of its existence. Whether homeowners reside in a small cottage or a sprawling estate, they often seem to complain about the closets, their discouraging scarcity, and frustratingly small size. We are nearly all engaged in a never-ending fight to fit more and more stuff into very little space.
- Keep photos of your kids, family members, pets or whoever you want on the desktop, real or virtual.
- When Ariel Meadow Stallings of Offbeat Empire needed room for baby, she converted the walk-in closet (below, left) in her one-bedroom condo into a nursery (below, right).
- This might include shoes, jackets, umbrellas, book bags, pet items, and a litany of other options you might choose from.
Leave considerable space over your desk area (so you don’t hit your head every time you stand up) and put up some floating shelves to show off your precious items. Expanding your cloffice storage with drawers is a relatively simple process that works for every space. Feel free to buy a desk with built-in drawers or make your own. Then get drawer slides and attach your DIY drawers to the desktop. If you’re not keen on rewiring the inside of the closet, puck lights would be a good option.
Small Bedroom Closet Organization
Abby Metz, the DIY whiz who pens Do It Yourself Design blog, had three skinny hallway linen closets (above, left) that weren’t working for her. Meanwhile, she had a bunch of books with no official home. So she converted one of the closets into display shelving, (above, right). Stallings left one closet shelf in place to stow soft items like bedding, stuffed toys, and off-season clothing, since the family lives in an area prone to earthquakes. When Ariel Meadow Stallings of Offbeat Empire needed room for baby, she converted the walk-in closet (below, left) in her one-bedroom condo into a nursery (below, right).
Another excellent small office design is to build a flexible storage wall structure with floor-to-ceiling supports and brackets. Open storage systems do offer complete control over the storage area. Not only can you get shelves of any depth, but useful pegboard-style panels or drawers can be added in too for stationery. Make the importance of a home office, like a closet office, into something breathtaking with the help or a feature wall of shelving or pinned pictures.

When Lina Darnell, the DIY mom behind Fancy Frugal Life, first saw her home, she knew her kids would love the mini closet under the stairs (top, left). So she created what her kids call “the club” (above, right) using stuff found around the house, like the https://remotemode.net/ faux flower boxes and wall art. Tricia actually gained space with the new closet configuration, and now more stuff fits in this 10-by-10-foot bedroom. For a 2-second home project, place pillows and a furry rug (like this one from Ikea) on the closet floor.
